Description
The impressive anhinga poses beautifully while perched alertly on the branch of a cypress tree. In this original photograph, digitally painted, the colors of nature in the green foliage and blue sky are brilliant, and the brown and black feathers of the bird show off against them.
The anhinga is an extraordinarily adept fishing bird. One often sees these birds with wings outspread while they sit near the water because their feathers do not have the oil waterproofing that other fishing birds have and they must spread their wings to dry the feathers. Here, though, the beautiful female bird is at rest, calmly surveying the area from a comfortable perch. The scientific name is Anhinga anhinga for the subspecies found in more southern ranges, such as in South America, and Anhinga leucogaster for that found in more northern areas such as the southern United States. The anhinga is sometimes called the snake bird because of how the long neck appears, sticking out of the water as it swims. It is also called a darter because it hunts by spearing fish with its sharp bill.
