Description
Mom and the four ducklings in this black-bellied whistling duck family make their way across blue pond waters and amid green lily pads. Mom leads, of course, and her bright orange bill is reflected in the water. The kids form an obedient line for the swim, and they're reflected as well.
The black-bellied whistling duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis) is now native to Central and South America and to the southern United States. These five were found in Port Charlotte, Florida, at a lovely little pond-marsh area called Ollie's Pond. These are gregarious birds, sometimes gathering in large flocks, and they can be noisy with their whistling call. The bird is sometimes called the black-bellied tree duck after their habitual nesting habitat of hollow trees.
