Description
The black vulture (Coragyps atratus) has discovered a fish feast at the edge of the waves rolling onto the beach - not my choice for dinner but the bird seems pretty protective of its find from the obvious attitude toward me and my camera. The fish is a big one, if the worse for wear after clearly having been in the water for a long time. And the bird's got the meal to itself, without ten others vying for part of it as you'd usually see the scene. This bird's habitat runs from the southeastern U.S. and south as far as Chile and Uruguay. When I first was exposed to these scavengers, I hadn't been warned that they have an unusual taste - for your rubber car wiper blades. Whoops. While it may not be a pretty sight seeing them clean up road kill and washed up fish and . . . without them and scavengers like them, we'd be in big ecological trouble.
