Description
This high contrast black and white image shows a blue heron, sometimes called a little blue heron (as opposed to the great blue heron) standing motionless in shallow water. Below, the bird's crisp black reflection is shown as well, as is the suggestion of a water ripple.
The little blue heron (Egretta caerulea) is a small heron with plumage in dark blues and purples. It breeds in the Gulf states of the US, through Central America and the Caribbean and south to Peru and Uruguay. In spite of its name, it's probably a close relative of the snowy egret and looks much like that bird when young, until it molts to adult colors. This minimalist treatment emphasizes the beautiful form of this little shore bird.
