Description
The great egret (sometimes referred to as the great white egret or the great egret or the large egret or the common egret), Ardea alba, strikes a classic pose here, standing tall and regal on a harbor piling and dramatically backed by clouds - all in high-key overall tones of warmth. These beautiful birds were hunted nearly to extinction in the late 19th century for their plumes. They are sometimes confused with the smaller snowy egret. These birds have all white feathers and yellow bills. They are impressive hunters of fish, frogs, and other aquatic animals. They stand motionless in shallow water waiting for their prey to approach and then strike with blinding speed. I've spent many an hour watching their behavior on Florida's southwest coast.
