Description
Cracker cattle, a tough, horned, wiry breed, are found in Florida and are well adapted to the rigors of that landscape. Here a cow stands at the entrance to a fenced field area, at Badcock Ranch near Punta Gorda, Florida, and seems to be suggesting we follow her down the winding dirt road and to the lush countryside beyond. These cattle are descended from Spanish stock imported to North America in the sixteenth century. The term "cracker" comes from the crack of the Florida cowboys' whips used to drive the cattle out of the rough palmetto scrub.
