Description
There is an ethereal beauty in the dance of the jellyfish as they float gently with the ocean currents. Here, the moon jellyfish exhibit a beautiful pale lavender translucence under aquarium lights at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, and small pinpoints of light show behind them as though they are dancing in space against a backdrop of stars of the galaxy. The "eyes" of a jellyfish are primitive light-sensing organs around the rim. The moon jelly (Aurelia aurita) is found in coastal areas worldwide. An adult free-floating jellyfish (groups of them are called smacks) is called a medusa because the animals reminded early scientists of Medusa, a monster from ancient Greek mythology. She had a hairdo of living snakes, and a look at her could turn a person to stone.
