Description
The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), here swimming and facing the viewer, is a turtle native to the saltwater and brackish coastal tidal marshes of the eastern and southern United States, although it needs fresh water for drinking. It's named for the diamond shaped growth rings on its top shell. The carapace length can be from 5 to 10 inches, with the female being the larger. Females nest several times a year, and the young are born in brackish or nearly fresh water and then as they grow move toward the saltier habitats.
