Description
Steps to a beach area on Little Sarasota Bay at historic Spanish Point in Osprey, Florida. The steps lead through the mangroves, which are so important to Florida ecological systems. The steps are needed to get "down" because the area has been built up with what is known as a shell midden, a conglomeration of shells over time by the prehistoric native inhabitants of the area over 5,000 years ago.The Spanish Point complex has 30 historical, environmental, and archaeological acres of display at this outdoor museum on Little Sarasota Bay. Included are artifacts of Florida's intrepid pioneer homesteaders at Sarasota's first produce packing house, the charming St. Mary's Chapel and pioneer cemetery, a landscaped pergola, a shell midden, and the beautifully preserved Guptill House, built in 1901.
