Description
The downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) searches for a meal among the nooks and crannies of a tree in autumn and in the late afternoon's golden light. The orange leaves of fall are ready to give way to the winds of winter but still cling tenaciously to the branches. The downy, clinging to the side of the trunk, looks steadily at one spot as though an insect has been spotted and is about to be grabbed. The downy is the smallest woodpecker in North America. Their range covers most of the US and Canada.
