Description
This high contrast black and white image shows a fish crow (or fishing crow) in shallow water searching on and beneath small rocks for tidbits to eat. Below, the bird's crisp black reflection is shown as well, as is the suggestion of a few rocks and shells.
The fish crow (Corvus ossifragus) is found in wetland and coastal habitats in the east and southeast part of the US, This bird is a little smaller than the American crow and has a squared off tail. When it gives its distinctive nasal call, it often fluffs up its neck feathers into a ruff. It does most of its foraging by walking, especially on the shore or in very shallow water. It is omnivorous and may feed on practically anything it finds, including fish, insects, shellfish, berries, seeds, nuts, and bird and turtle eggs. It is known to sometimes fly into the air with mollusks and drop them onto rocks to break them open.
