Description
The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) peers out from its green environment in the grasses, in its wild, natural habitat. This tortoise is native to the southeastern United States and is considered a keystone species. It digs burrows that are shelter for more than 350 other species. These long-lived reptiles inhabit upland areas including forests, pastures, and yards. The gopher tortoise is the state reptile of Georgia and the state tortoise of Florida. These are solitary animals except during breeding season and each needs about 4 acres of habitat.
