Description
A regal Lipizzan white stallion looks hopefully from his stall at his visitor. It's quite possible, you see, that treats will be forthcoming from that visitor's pockets. The portrait is a closeup of the appealing face of the horse, and while his nose sticks out between the uprights of the stall, his eyes are seen on either side of those uprights. His attitude is one of alertness, friendliness, and great interest. This horse's name is Nicky, and he's one of the Herrmanns' Original Lipizzan Stallions of Austria, winter quartered near Sarasota, Florida, where their enjoyable practice sessions are open to the public.
The Lippizzaner breed dates back to the 16th century, with the development of the line supported by the Hapsburg nobility. The name Lipizzan comes from that of a horse farm in what is now known as Slovenia. A group of these horses was famously rescued by troops under U.S. General Patton at the end of World War II, as Russian troops were moving into the area, and brought to the United States. The event was portrayed in the Disney movie "Miracle of the White Stallions." The beautiful routines of the horses are known as "airs above the ground," and the movements find their origin in the animals' historical and very practical work as warhorses. It is an interesting fact that these horses are born black or brown and then mature into the white (often a pale gray) color over the next few years.
