Description
In this color image in golden tones, the view is from inside the Grays Harbor Lighthouse, in Washington state in the US, straight up from the base, through the ascending circles of the spiral staircase, and to the top, open to the outside. The feeling is one of both vertigo and awe at the height and the beauty of the design. Built by architect Carl W. Leick, the structure stands 107 feet tall, and the octagonal tower is the tallest lighthouse in Washington and the third tallest on the West Coast. The dedication and lighting ceremony was held on June 30, 1898
The lighthouse is on Point Chehalis at the entrance to Grays Harbor, Westport. The structure is built of brick, concrete, and sandstone. The town of Grays Harbor is named after Captain Robert Gray, a Boston fur trader, who discovered it in May 1792. Although the lighthouse was originally 400 feet from the high tide mark, today it is over 3000 feet from shore because of accretion caused mostly by the jetty system in the harbor.
