Description
The elegant great blue heron (Ardea herodias) stands on an exposed sand bar at low tide, keeping a sharp eye out for prey perhaps left by the retreating waters. The amazing stillness of these birds when they're on watch is seen doubly here in the full reflection mirroring the heron. The rich, low sunlight warms the plumage of the bird, the reflection, and the sand bars. These sizable wading birds are common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galapagos Islands.
