Description
The green moray eel (Gymnothorax funebris) is found in the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico and south to Brazil. It is, surprisingly, actually brown, but the mucus that covers its body imparts a yellow-green effect. Eels have the reputation of fierceness, at least partially because of their often open mouths (as here), which indicate not that they are about to bite but that they are breathing. These are one of the largest of the morays and the record size is 8 feet and 65 pounds. Because of their long, scaleless bodies, morays have been thought to be sea serpents. This individual was housed in the Florida Aquarium in Tampa.
