Description
While this African spurred tortoise (Geochelone sulcata) does look indignant, given his open mouth and facial expression, it's more likely that he is simply excited about the fact that his breakfast is soon to arrive at an animal refuge area in southwest Florida. The tortoise's native environment is at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. The spurred tortoise is the third largest in the world, growing to 30 to 40 inches in length and up to 150 pounds, and they can live 50 to 150 years. They excavate burrows in the ground to get to cooler areas with higher moisture levels.
