A solitary limpkin (Aramus guarauna) wades slowly through the shallows looking for a tidbit to eat. The bright blue waters and crisp reflection make this gentle moment a pleasure to share.
This large, long-legged bird is found in freshwater wetlands in warm parts of the Americas from Florida to Argentina. I most often see these birds singly. They can be quite territorial. Apple snails, which they break open with their long bills, make up a large part of their diet. If you've ever heard their loud, distinctive call, you probably won't forget it. There's a story I've heard that suggests that when a Tarzan film was shot in Florida, they left the limpkin's call in because it sounded so good to simulate jungle sounds. That's probably apocryphal, but it sounds good.
Although much of my career had been in editing and writing, I have been delighted for some time to concentrate on both photography and artistic creations based on photography. Through this medium I thoroughly enjoy the world, from city to suburb to country, from my roots in the US Midwest to fascinating Florida, to Ohio, where I now live. My artistic interests are eclectic. Much engages me. I hope my art will please and engage you as well.
