Description
The gator (alligator - A. mississippiensis) is a master at lurking, nearly invisibly. This one, practically at my feet at the edge of a pond, almost escaped my notice, and I'm fairly accustomed to finding them in my environment on walks. This one is surrounded by branches protruding from the water and has only its eyes and snout showing above the surface. You can see why it's recommended that you keep a good eye on your pets and children around fresh water here in Florida.
Alligators, commonly called just gators, are native to the southeastern United States and inhabit fresh waters such as rivers, lakes, marshes, swamps, and the like. They are also sometimes found in brackish waters as well. The alligator is Florida's official state reptile, and if you live in this state and are anywhere near water, you've undoubtedly got one of more of these as neighbors. These reptiles were once extremely endangered but now, because of strong conservation efforts, they have not only made a comeback, but are actually thriving. Please support our endangered species laws and regulations, which have recently come under unprecedented attack.
