Description
Although this Florida manatee was in captivity, at the Naples, Florida, zoo, the point of view here is as you would see it if you were swimming with this gentle creature. The animals are highly endangered because of loss of habitat but primarily because of the harm humans cause them with their boat propellers. Florida’s state marine mammal, sometimes called the sea cow, is a large aquatic relative of the elephant. These herbivores call the warm waters (they rarely venture into water of less than 68 degrees) of shallow rivers, bays, estuaries, canals and coastal areas home. In the summer they may migrate to the north and west.
