Description
This bright-eyed little fella sitting among the grasses is a marsh rabbit, Sylvilagus palustris. It's found in coastal and wetland areas of the eastern and southern United States. It's always found near water and is a strong swimmer. It's a smaller cottontail than the more familiar eastern cottontail. The characteristic that distinguishes it from all other cottontails is that the underside of its tail is dark, while that of others of the species is white. I found this one at the Calusa Nature Center in southwest Florida.
