A giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) at the San Diego Zoo looks directly at the viewer here as though to ask for a treat or a playmate. The panda, a native of China, is highly endangered because of habitat destruction. While 99% of their diet in the wild is bamboo, their diet in captivity is much more varied.
