Description
This macro image is of the brilliantly red and beautifully detailed male scarlet skimmer dragonfly (Crocothemis servilla). This individual, perched on a stick and backed by the green of nearby foliage, was found in southwest Florida. The scarlet skimmer originated in Asia but was accidentally introduced into Florida around 1975, where the species is now common. The male has the thin black stripe you can see here. Dragonflies and damselflies are of the order Odonta, which means "toothed ones" for their large jaws and sharp teeth.
