Description
An osprey and an anhinga seemingly flying together might seem a bit unusual, but these two were perched in the same tree and decided to leave the immediate vicinity as I approached them in Port Charlotte, Florida. Both of these beautiful, strong birds are a wonder to behold and enjoy in the sky.
The anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is an adept swimmer and fisher, but it doesn't have the oils that other water birds have on its feathers, so it's often seen with wings spread to dry them off. The osprey, a bird found nearly worldwide, is also known as a sea hawk or fish hawk. Its population numbers dropped dangerously during the 1950s and 60s because of eggshell thinning caused by pesticides. But their numbers are increasing nicely now.
