Description
In St. Augustine, Florida, at the Castillo de San Marcos, brightly costumed British soldiers gather on the grassy central courtyard. At the fort, both Spanish and British soldiers are represented alternately to show the historical periods when each were in control of this fortification.
This is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay, the fort was designed by the Spanish engineer Ignacio Daza. Construction began in 1672, 107 years after the city's founding by Spanish Admiral and conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire. After Britain gained control of Florida in 1763, the fort was renamed Fort St. Mark until 1783 when it was transferred back to Spain. Finally, Florida was ceded to the United States in 1821. Possession of the fort changed six times, all peacefully, among four government entities: Spain, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America.
