In this dramatic view in black and white of the iconic Duchesne Incline on Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the angle is from the platform at the bottom of the tracks looking up along their length to the far away station at the top. The passenger car rests at the bottom, ready to be loaded and on its way, while another car waits at the top to start its downward journey. The foliage presses in from either side, and the sky presages a storm.
The Incline is an inclined-plane railroad. It was originally powered by steam in the late nineteenth century. It is now cable powered. This privately owned facility was closed in 1962 but was saved by the efforts of a nonprofit group and reopened in 1963. The tracks are 800 feet long, and the incline is at a 30 degree angle. It has been completely refurbished and is a major tourist attraction of the city.
Although much of my career had been in editing and writing, I have been delighted for some time to concentrate on both photography and artistic creations based on photography. Through this medium I thoroughly enjoy the world, from city to suburb to country, from my roots in the US Midwest to fascinating Florida, to Ohio, where I now live. My artistic interests are eclectic. Much engages me. I hope my art will please and engage you as well.
