Description
At the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Florida, slim tentacled sea anemones fluoresce dramatically under the blue aquarium lighting. The gossamer strands of these living and always impressive creatures fan out in the currents. They seem like part of a spectacular piece of space drama in their brilliance and their glowing centers.
These water dwelling predatory animals use their tentacles to sting and scoop up prey and carry it to their central mouths. At a slight touch, the tentacles release a harpoonlike stinger into the prey and inject a paralyzing neurotoxin. Of the order Actiniaria, these polyps are relatives of the corals and jellyfish and, because of their appearance, are named for a familiar flower, the anemone.
