Description
A young messenger boy carries important dispatches in his leather shoulder bag on the battlefield during the American Civil War. In this painting, the youngster is shown in a quiet and contemplative moment and his sadness is apparent. While most soldiers in this conflict were between approximately 18 and 40, boys did serve as drummer boys, musicians, messengers, nurses, and scouts for the troops. But during the heat of battle, many put such duties aside and joined the troops in combat.
