Description
The Indian Ghareal (Gavialis gangeticus) is one of the largest of the crocodilians and one of the most endangered. This most unusual looking animal looks almost alien, with its very long and thin snout and many visible teeth. Here it lazes in the water with only the head protruding above the surface. The environment seems sylvan and lovely with the greenery and shore rocks, as well as the animal, perfectly reflected in the water.
The gharial is also know as a gavial. It is a river dweller and is still found in India, Pakistan, and Nepal, but is probably extinct, or nearly so, in Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Burma. These animals are usually not aggressive toward one another except at breeding season. And they generally would not prey upon humans or other large mammals, although the female might be aggressive in protecting the nest. This very healthy specimen lives at St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in Florida.
