Description
The elegant white egret (sometimes called the great white egret or the great egret or the large egret or the common egret), Ardea alba, is here in full flight and contrasts dramatically with the deep shadows of the wetlands beyond it. These beautiful birds were hunted nearly to extinction in the late 19th century for their plumes. They are sometimes confused with the smaller snowy egret. These birds have all white feathers, yellow bills, and black legs. They are impressive hunters of fish, frogs, and other aquatic animals. They stand motionless in shallow water waiting for their prey to approach and then strike with blinding speed. I've spent many an hour watching their behavior, as I did with this one on Florida's southwest coast.
