Description
The wood stork (Mycteria americana) is perhaps not the most classically beautiful bird, but it is nonetheless a strong and impressive one, as you can see in this image of one in full flight. It is found in tropical and subtropical habitats in the Americas and the Caribbean. In Florida, where I found this bird, it breeds in late winter when, because of the dry season, fish are concentrated in smaller and shallower areas, making for easier capture. The birds have been listed as endangered but have recently been upgraded to threatened because of the successful conservation effort on their behalf over the last thirty years.
