Description
The kitchen of the Houmas House Plantation (also known as the Burnside Plantation) in Louisiana is full of pots, plates, and other utensils of the era. The ambiance is one of warmth with the communal table, the fireplace, the displayed metalware, and the hanging copper pots.
The plantation was established in the late 1700s, and the mansion was built in 1840. The sugarcane plantation was known by the term Houmas because the land it occupies was acquired from the Native American Houma tribe. Alexander Latil and Maurice Conway obtained all of their land on the eastern side of the Mississippi River in 1774. The U.S. obtained the area through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
