Artist's Description

At Bessemer Court at Station Square in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stands the massive Bessemer converter, or Bessemer Furnace. The 1930s machine was used to convert molten iron into steel. In this cityscape, the converter dramatically occupies the foreground. Beyond it is an antique red railroad car. And beyond that rise the skyscrapers of downtown Pittsburgh and the cloud-strewn sky.

The Bessemer process was a technique brought to Pittsburgh from England by Andrew Carnegie. Station Square is now a 52-acre riverfront shopping and dining complex but was originally a station for Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad, and the property is a beloved city landmark.

About Mitch Spence

Mitch Spence

Although much of my career had been in editing and writing, I have been delighted for some time to concentrate on both photography and artistic creations based on photography. Through this medium I thoroughly enjoy the world, from city to suburb to country, from my roots in the US Midwest to fascinating Florida, to Ohio, where I now live. My artistic interests are eclectic. Much engages me. I hope my art will please and engage you as well.
