La Calavera Catrina, this female skeleton figure, has become an icon of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, a multi-day festival often associated with October 31, November 1 and November 2. Here, in this colorful digital painting from an original photograph, she has one bony hand over her heart and one wrapped around the handle of a bright, decorative umbrella. The colors and patterns of her costume match those of the umbrella. The festival focuses on remembrance and celebration of loved ones who have died. The original Catrina was an etching by famous Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator, and lithographer Jos Guadalupe Posada. Now, however, the figure can be found in many forms, such as this ornately dressed skeleton.

Although much of my career had been in editing and writing, I have been delighted for some time to concentrate on both photography and artistic creations based on photography. Through this medium I thoroughly enjoy the world, from city to suburb to country, from my roots in the US Midwest to fascinating Florida, to Ohio, where I now live. My artistic interests are eclectic. Much engages me. I hope my art will please and engage you as well.
