Artist's Description
The name mason bee is commonly used for species of bees in the genus Osmia. They're named for their habit of using mud or other “masonry” products in constructing their nests, which are made in naturally occurring gaps such as between cracks in stones or other small dark cavities. Some species prefer hollow stems or holes in wood made by wood-boring insects. Unlike honey bees or bumblebees, Osmia species are solitary; every female is fertile and makes her own nest, and no worker bees for these species exist. This constructed home for these bees to nest in was in the North Carolina Arboretum near Asheville. The arrangement of the nesting tubes makes a delightful and colorful pattern inside the outside wooden supports of the nesting area.
