Artist's Description
I think this red-bellied woodpecker may have been a fairly young bird, as it seemed a bit tentative when investigating the hole in the palm trunk. But it certainly was interested in it and returned to take looks quite a few times. But ultimately, it was disappointed if it was looking for a nest site because the folks whose yard the tree was in had it taken down, as it was dead. This medium size woodpecker, Melanerpes carolinus, in the family Picidae, breeds mostly in the eastern US and Canada and is a familiar sight for those of us who bird watch.
