Artist's Description
An osprey (Pandion haliaetus), with wings outstretched, balances on a tall dead tree while trying to maneuver its successful catch - a sizable fish. The bird obviously doesn't want to drop its meal and appears to be trying to wedge it into a crook in the dead branch. The osprey, a bird found nearly worldwide, is also known as a sea hawk or fish hawk. Its population numbers dropped dangerously during the 1950s and 60s because of eggshell thinning caused by pesticides. But their numbers are increasing nicely now.
