Description
This colorful gathering of black-bellied whistling ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) was visiting my backyard, which abuts a small lake. To capture the whole of the group and their pleasing display, I've used the panoramic format and a painting style. I always look forward to their visits. They tend to drop in several times a year. They are not originally native to my area (Florida), but they've been in the state so many years that they seem as though they are. Yes, they do whistle - sort of - in a very unusual call. These are gregarious birds, sometimes gathering in large flocks, and they can be noisy. The bird is sometimes called the black-bellied tree duck after the habitual nesting habitat of hollow trees.
