Description
Here, these cotton stainer bugs, Dysdercus suturellus, are occupying the petals of a bright orange hibisus bloom, seen against a dark background. Don't let anyone tell you photography isn't educational. I'd never seen such creatures as these before. I've determined their common name comes from their habit of feeding and leaving behind stains on cotton (and also oranges and hibiscus). Their habitat is primarily southern Florida. When I shot this, the only thing I was paying much attention to was the one bug. Only later did I realize I had another - one that looked completely different. I finally determined though that it's the same type of bug, just seen directly from the side.
