Description
A pair of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) seem to be performing a dance for two in the backyard of my home in Port Charlotte, Florida. It abuts one of the many small lakes in the area, where these two decided to hang out one recent afternoon. The loud call of one alerted me to its presence, and after much noise and strutting about, it attracted the second.
The common name comes from their habitat, such as that near the Platte River in Nebraska (near the prairie area called sandhills) which is one of their flyways, used by about 75% of their population during migrations. Some of these cranes are winter visitors and some decide to make Florida their permanent home and don't migrate at all.
