Description
What a pretty, happy girl this little red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) seems to be. She's holding to a tall blooming wetland plant with small pink flowers as she sings away. The light, cloud-filled sky as background here shows her off beautifully. She's clearly alert. Perhaps she's listening for the song of her suitor when she pauses in her own song.
There is striking sexual dimorphism (the condition where the two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics beyond the differences in their sexual organs) in these birds, with only the male displaying the red wing patches responsible for their name and with the female feathers in patterns of golds and browns, not the black of the male.
