Description
The head and shoulders of this extraordinary creature are featured as it crawls down a branch. The Jackson chameleon (Trioceros jacksonii) is also called the Jackson's or Jacksonian chameleon. Here, the animal holds tightly to a branch and is seen in profile. The background is deeply shadowed in natural green hues, showing off the form and details of the creature and its seemingly primitive beauty. The scientific name, Trioceros, derives from the three horns found on the heads of males. Native to African forests, subspecies have been illegally introduced to Hawaii and Florida. The animals are often bright green but can change color, as can other chameleons, depending on their mood or physical condition or environment. The small reptiles ubiquitous in the southern United States that are often referred to in error as chameleons are actually anoles.
