Description
This monument to explorer Juan Ponce de Leon is in Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda, Florida. Here, in an artistic, black and white, presentation of the statue, the explorer looks and points into the distance. The treatment suggests an appearance out of the pages of an ancient time.
So the story goes, Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of Charlotte Harbor in what is now the Gulf coast of Florida more than 500 years ago He was born in Spain and died in what is now Havana, Cuba, in 1522. He is interred beneath the high altar of the Dominican Cathedral of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where this epitaph is given: "Beneath this stone repose the bones of the valiant Lion whose deeds surpassed the greatness of his name." The legend of his arrival in Charlotte Harbor suggests that he and his crew were attacked by the resident Calusa Indians and chased away from these shores.
