Description
If this great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) youngster hadn't had its eye wide open, it would have nearly disappeared in the camouflage of the Spanish moss hanging from the nest tree. One of the other fledglings had just taken wing on a brave test flight, and it appeared that this one might be considering trying the same.
The great horned owl, also called a hoot owl or tiger owl, is the most widely distributed owl in the Americas. It's an extremely adaptable bird and a powerful predator, with a wide variety of prey, such as rats, rabbits, mice, voles, snakes, and even skunks.
