Description
The tabebuia tree, in the family Bignoniaceae, dramatically announces that spring has arrived in Punta Gorda, Florida, in the state's southwest area. Here, in this digital painting from an original photograph, the brilliant yellow blooms of two such trees are showcased against the wall of a building in the historic downtown section of the city.
Varieties of the tree, which is native to the West Indies and South and Central America, flower in pink, lavender, and, most commonly, golden yellow, as here, in 1- to 4-inch wide blooms that hang in clusters. A common name, trumpet tree, comes from these blooms, which are tubular and lightly frilled at the top with multiple stamens.
