Description
The sea grape (Coccoloba_uvifera), a hardy evergreen, is a tropical tree used often in coastal landscaping, sometimes as a barrier plant to protect the coastline. This small tree/shrub is native to south Florida, the Caribbean, and South America. It's big rounded leaves make the tree easily identifiable. Here, those leaves have fallen in a group during a storm, and they've changed from their deep green to various shades of autumnal orange (although this image is from the month of May). The colors are warm and pleasing and the leaves seem to have arranged themselves in an artful array and design. The female tree needs a nearby male to cross pollinate in order to bear fruit, which resembles small grapes. It is edible and some make jelly from it.
