Description
The huge old banyan trees (Ficus microcarpa) overlook a quiet area of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida, Here tables and chairs are arranged for patrons to have a refreshment and delight in the lush beauty around them and the patterns of light and shadow created by the overhanging branches. The trees were planted here in 1939. Banyan is not a botanical term but rather is a general term for a type of ficus (fig) tree that may produce such aerial root systems as these spectacular ones.
