Description
It's not often in Florida that foliage colors can remind one of the autumn displays of the north, but the soft needles of the cypress can at times turn beautifully golden and do just that. Here, the tree shows off splendidly against a blue sky in which birds are on the wing. Beyond the tree is part of Ollie's Pond in Port Charlotte, Florida, where a great white egret searches for a fish dinner in the shallow water.
Ollie's Pond is named in the memory of Oliver H. Hewitt (1916-1999), retired Professor of Wildlife Management at Cornell University and an accomplished ornithologist, who regarded this pond as one of his favorite birding sites.

Well I just love the surprise of that distant egret and its reflection when I open this full size. And I also love seeing the foliage up close. I think once I read that cypress are conifers, but just the same I never really KNEW that if you know what I mean. I won't forget now. And the color is lovely.
Mitch Spence replied:
Nikolyn, thank you. I do yearn for the gold sometimes, and it's a pleasure to find a tree like this. The pond is not a large area, but it does provide a lovely walk of just over a mile, I think, to circle it.
