Description
The interesting architecture, in white, blue, and yellow, of the Port B Buildings at the downtown Channelside district at Tampa Bay, Florida, are here topped by a beautiful cloud-filled sky and fronted by a large white, yellow, and black untitled abstract metal sculpture by George Sugarman. The sculpture is best known by the locals' title - "The Exploding Chicken." The nickname was originally suggested by Tampa Tribune columnist Steve Otto. The piece was commissioned by NCNB Bank and placed on the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Ashley Drive, where it sat for twenty-two years. In 2005 the new owners of the Rivergate Tower Building there donated the sculpture to the city's art collection, and it was eventually dismantled and finally placed at Channelside in 2012.
