Description
In the midst of a molt, this little blue heron (Egretta caerulea) doesn't look the way one would expect. In some ways, the feather pattern might even be more interesting with the white splashes. But either way, it's a beautiful, elegant shore wader that it's always a pleasure to see. Here, the environment enhances the avian beauty with scattered shoreline rocks and a soft blue wave pattern.
This shorebird is a resident of wetlands and coastal areas in the southeast region of the United States. The young are almost completely white and resemble snowy egrets, and the young birds sometimes mix in with flocks of these birds. The adults change into a slate blue plumage. This individual was fishing at the Bayshore Live Oak Park in Port Charlotte, Florida, on the shores of Charlotte Harbor..
